My father, a free french 1943/1945 ...on the same way as the 3rd Infantry Division |
During WW2, 23.000 French volunteers left their invaded country to join the Forces Françaises Libres and the Allied in North Africa. Risking their lives, they crossed the Pyrenees mountains. Most of them were captured by Franco's police, and spent many months in dreadful jails. As soon as they were released, they reached North Africa by boat and enrolled in the French Army. But History is selective… With time, some facts became more important than others. Although they wrote some of the most important pages of our History and undoubtedly the most beautiful pages of their own lives, these men became disregarded, ignored and then, one day, forgotten.. The pages they wrote were made of distress, hope and victory. They carried forever the supreme honour of « never having put their weapons down » during the dark years of their youth. My father, a « officer chauffeur », was one of them. He drove a command car from Casablanca to Innsbruck in Austria. He was 22. I give him my voice to bring a new life to his adventure. |
